Autism conference signup under way
VERNON — A conference for parents of children with disabilities and professionals who work with these children will be presented by the Oneida Autism/Special Needs Support Group and St. John’s Church, Oneida, at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 1, at Dibble’s Inn, Route 5. The event is free. Donations are welcome.
"A Time for Us," will feature the Carey family, who’s 13 year old son with autism died in the care of a state-run residential facility and who worked with legislators to pass Jonathan’s Law in honor of their son.
Other speakers will include:
• John Salka, a parent of a child with special needs who he said received poor care. Salka is Brookfield town supervisor and sits on the Madison County Committee of Public Health. He is also vice-chair of the Committee on Mental Health and hopes to increase awareness of mental health issues on a countywide level.
• Lenny Giardino, teacher and author of "The Quest for Human Decency; Realities versus Perception." Giardino will discuss his book and the rights of the parent to pursue an education for their children. The book covers questions and perceptions of the No Child Left Behind act and the social justice issues in state-mandated curriculums.
Reservations are suggested and may be made by calling 361-1090.
